This is a birding tour, designed to see as many bird species as possible, with special focus on specialty species.
Experience the remarkable birdlife of Trinidad and Tobago on a tour that combines the very different habitats and bird communities of these two Caribbean islands. We’ll begin on Tobago, exploring the forests of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve for species such as Trinidad Motmot, White-tailed Sabrewing, Blue-backed Manakin, and Stripe-breasted Spinetail. A boat trip to Little Tobago Island will add an entirely different group of birds, with chances for Red-billed Tropicbird, Brown Booby, Red-footed Booby, Brown Noddy, and other seabirds along the island’s dramatic cliffs.
Back on Trinidad, we’ll spend time along the northeast coast at Mt. Plaisir, where our main goal will be finding the critically endangered Trinidad Piping-Guan in the forests around Montevideo Forest Reserve. From there, we’ll continue to the legendary Asa Wright Nature Centre, where the veranda, feeders, trails, and surrounding forest offer excellent birding for hummingbirds, manakins, antbirds, tanagers, toucans, and many other species. We’ll also explore the Northern Range along Blanchisseuse Road and visit Dunston Cave for the chance to see the unusual Oilbird.
The tour also takes us into Trinidad’s open savannas, wetlands, and coastal habitats, giving us a chance to experience just how varied the birding can be on a relatively small island. At Aripo Savannah and Nariva Swamp, we’ll look for species such as Savannah Hawk, Red-breasted Meadowlark, Red-bellied Macaw, Rufous Crab Hawk, and a variety of wetland birds. We’ll finish with shorebirding around Waterloo before taking a private boat trip through Caroni Swamp, where hundreds of Scarlet Ibis returning to their evening roost provide one of the signature wildlife experiences of Trinidad and Tobago.
