This is a birding tour, designed to see as many bird species as possible, with special focus on specialty species.
Panama is one of the premier birding destinations in the Neotropics, where Caribbean lowlands, foothill forests, wetlands, and highland habitats combine to produce remarkable avian diversity within a compact region. This tour focuses on the rich ecosystems of Bocas del Toro and western Panama, pairing exceptional birding with comfortable lodging at Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge. With strategic boat access to remote sites and excellent local logistics, we maximize time in productive habitat while exploring a wide variety of ecosystems.
The Bocas del Toro archipelago offers exciting island birding alongside nearby mainland forests rich in regional specialties and Caribbean slope species. Birding begins right at the lodge, where canopy views, forest trails, and mangrove edges provide constant activity, from hummingbirds and mixed flocks to displaying manakins and daily parrot movements. Carefully planned excursions expand our reach to outstanding locations including Palo Seco Protected Forest, San San Pond Sak Wetlands, and the highlands of Fortuna, each adding new species and habitat diversity.
This itinerary balances focused field time with relaxed evenings and excellent accommodation. From lowland specialties and colorful tanagers to highland endemics and sought-after species such as Three-wattled Bellbird, this journey offers an exploration of one of Panama’s exciting regions.
