Hungary: Bird Hide Photography

Hungary offers some of the finest bird photography in Europe, and this tour is designed to put us remarkably close to an incredible variety of species. Beginning in Budapest, we’ll travel south into the countryside, where a network of private photography hides provides access to wetlands, woodland watering holes, reflecting pools, and active nesting areas. Morning and afternoon sessions allow us to take advantage of the best light and bird activity.

Waterbird hides offer beautiful opportunities for Black Stork, Eurasian Spoonbill, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Avocet, and White Stork. Woodland watering holes bring normally difficult-to-photograph species within close range, including Black Woodpecker, Hawfinch, European Robin, Eurasian Jay, Eurasian Blue Tit, Great Tit, Wryneck, Eurasian Nuthatch, and European Goldfinch.

Some of the tour’s most exciting experiences come from nesting hides located throughout the countryside. Established to support local breeding populations in cooperation with Hungary’s National Parks, these non-intrusive hides provide extraordinary opportunities to photograph Common Hoopoe, European Bee-eater, European Roller, and Red-footed Falcon, including adults carrying food and feeding young. Golden Oriole, Red-backed Shrike, and Little Owl are other exciting possibilities.

Our schedule will remain flexible, allowing us to concentrate on the hides offering the best activity and photographic conditions and return to favorite locations when opportunities are especially good.

We’ll finish back in Budapest with an evening boat trip on the Danube, taking in the city’s spectacular illuminated riverfront, a wonderful finale to a week filled with incredible birds, intimate encounters, and memory cards loaded with amazing images.
