Experience one of Europe’s greatest wildlife destinations on an immersive bird photography adventure through Romania’s spectacular Danube Delta. This vast maze of reedbeds, lakes, channels, and traditional villages supports an extraordinary diversity of birds. Designed specifically for photographers, our tour combines dedicated boat sessions, strategically located photography hides, exceptional wildlife encounters, and a glimpse into the unique culture of the Delta.
Our adventure begins in Mila 23, a unique fishing village accessible only by water and surrounded by some of the richest bird habitat in the Delta. Staying here puts us close to the action and allows us to take advantage of the best morning and evening light. For our first four days, we’ll enjoy two dedicated boat photography sessions each day, exploring narrow channels, expansive lakes, and towering reedbeds. Photographing from the boats provides opportunities for close encounters and low perspectives on an incredible variety of birds. Pelicans will be among our most exciting targets, with both Dalmatian Pelican and Great White Pelican offering possibilities for flight, feeding, and group photographs. Other targets include Ferruginous Duck, Little Bittern, Eurasian Spoonbill, White-tailed Eagle, White Stork, Bearded Reedling, and Whiskered Tern.
From Mila 23, we transfer to the remote area of Letea, where we’ll spend time at a series of specialized photography hides. The water hides provide opportunities to photograph shorebirds and secretive marsh species at eye level, including Little Crake, Black-winged Stilt, Common Greenshank, and Ruddy Shelduck. Other hides focus on colorful and charismatic birds such as Little Owl, European Bee-eater, European Roller, Eurasian Greenfinch, and European Goldfinch. The Letea area is also known for large gatherings of Collared Pratincoles, providing exciting opportunities for both portraits and flight photography. We’ll also keep our cameras ready for Golden Jackals and the famous wild horses of Letea, which roam freely through this remarkable landscape.
Our time in the Delta will also include a special cultural experience with the Lipovan people, whose communities have maintained traditions shaped by generations of life along the river. We’ll experience traditional Lipovan dress and song, adding another dimension to our exploration of the region.
From pelicans lifting off the water in the morning light to brilliantly colored bee-eaters and rollers, the Danube Delta offers an incredible range of photographic possibilities. With twice-daily boat sessions, dedicated photography hides, abundant wildlife, and cultural experiences, this tour is an opportunity to photograph and experience one of Europe’s truly great wild places.
