This is a birding tour, designed to see as many bird species as possible, with special focus on specialty species.
Southeast Arizona is well known as the hummingbird capital of the United States, but many people forget about all the other amazing bird species of the area. Join us as we explore the “Sky Islands” of Arizona from Tucson to Portal and everywhere in between. This route will take us through the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts and to elevations above 8,000 feet in the Chiricahua and Catalina Mountains.
There are many species in southeastern Arizona that can be seen nowhere else in the United States as well as species that are endemic to southeastern Arizona and northwestern Mexico. Some of these highlights could include Montezuma and Scaled Quail, Greater Roadrunner, Buff-collared Nightjar, up to 14 species of hummingbirds including Blue-throated Mountain-gem, Lucifer, Broad-billed, and Violet-crowned Hummingbirds, Elf Owl, Whiskered Screech-Owl, Elegant Trogon, Arizona Woodpecker, Gilded Flicker, Rose-throated Becard, Greater Pewee, Buff-breasted Flycatcher, Mexican Chickadee, Bridled Titmouse, Black-capped Gnatcatcher, Bendire’s and Crissal Thrasher, Five-striped Sparrow, Hooded and Scott’s Oriole, Painted Redstart, Red-faced Warbler, and Hepatic Tanager.
If the bird highlights are not enough, there are also many other natural highlights. Many of these come in the evening when we are looking for owls. On many tours we will see a couple species of rattlesnakes, Arizona Blond Tarantula, a couple of species of skunks and more!
