This itinerary combines some of the most bird-rich areas of Costa Rica into one trip. Our trip will start by targeting Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow (endemic) in San Jose and birding the Quetzal Valley Natural Reserve for a wide variety of species we will not encounter elsewhere on the trip. This includes the endemic Coppery-headed Emerald.  We’ll then travel to the famous Carara National Park. This area is well known for its incredible diversity and is sure to add to our already incredible bird list. Highlights here could include Mangrove Hummingbird (endemic) and a variety of trogons, motmots, antbirds, woodcreepers, flycatchers, and much more!

Once we reach the Osa, we will be staying at the wonderful Danta Corovado Lodge. Highlights during our time in this incredible region could include Fiery-billed Aracari, Golden-naped Woodpecker, Black-hooded Antshrike, Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager (endemic), and Yellow-billed Cotinga.

As we continue north, we will slowly work our way higher and higher in elevation. We’ll make stops in the San Isidro Valley and at San Vito before arriving in the San Gerardo de Dota. While traveling up the slope, we hope to find species such as Turquoise Cotinga, Speckled Tanager, Orange-collared Manakin, Crested Oropendola, Ruddy Foliage-Gleaner, Costa Rican Swift, and many more.

We’ll end high up in the Talamanca Mountain Range, picking up a variety of species that call these mountains home, such as Resplendent Quetzal, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher, Volcano Junco, and Flame-throated Warbler. This route will allow for a chance at all of the Costa Rican mainland endemics!
