This is a birding tour, designed to see as many bird species as possible, with special focus on specialty species.
Colombia is one of the most exciting countries in South America for birding! Join us on this tour to see the wonderful birds of the incredible Santa Marta region of Colombia. Our tour will start in the city of Barranquilla. After spending some time in the mangroves and marshes along the coast, we’ll spend the bulk of our tour in the famed Santa Marta region and stay at the wonderful Mountain House lodge. This region is known for its incredible number of endemic species including Santa Marta Foliage-gleaner, Santa Marta Blossomcrown, Santa Marta Woodstar, Santa Marta Parakeet, Santa Marta Warbler, Santa Marta Antpitta, and many more!
From there, we’ll travel east to the dry forest along the Caribbean Coast. Along the way, we’ll spend a night in Palomino, so we are able to spend a morning birding in the nearby humid forests. Here we’ll be looking for Lance-tailed Manakin, White-bellied Antbird, and White-necked Puffbird among many others. From here we will continue to the dry forest habitat in the transitional zone of the Guajira Desert. There are a host of special birds for us to find here including Vermilion Cardinal, Orinocan Saltator, Chestnut Piculet, Buffy Hummingbird, and much more!
After exploring this fantastic region, you can choose to continue on our extension to the Perijá Mountains. Our lodging here is more basic, but it provides a great base to see the many Perijá endemics that can only be found in this mountain range. Black-fronted Brushfinch, Perijá Metaltail, Perijá Starfrontlet, Perijá Antpitta, and Perijá Thistletail, the namesake of the reserve we will be birding, are among the endemics we will be looking for. Visiting this remote region is sure to be a birding highlight for even the most seasoned of birders!
