Colombia is one of the most exciting countries in South America for birding! Join us on this tour to see the wonderful birds of the incredible Santa Marta region of Colombia. Our tour will start in the city of Barranquilla. From there, we’ll travel east to the dry forest along the Caribbean. Along the way, we’ll stop to look for a few specialties including Chestnut-winged Chachalaca, Russet-throated Puffbird, and Northern Screamer. Once we are in the dry forest, there are a host of special birds for us to find including Vermilion Cardinal, Orinocan Saltator, Chestnut Piculet, Buffy Hummingbird, and much more!

From here, we will visit the famous Santa Marta region and the wonderful El Dorado Lodge. This region is known for its incredible number of endemic species including Santa Marta Foliage-gleaner, Santa Marta Blossomcrown, Santa Marta Woodstar, Santa Marta Parakeet, Santa Marta Warbler, Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant, and more!

After exploring this fantastic region, you can also choose to continue on our extension to the Central Andes to experience more of the diversity that this country has to offer. We’ll fly from Barranquilla to Bogota to start the extension. Upon arrival in Bogota, we’ll visit an amazing hummingbird garden where we can expect highlights such as Blue-throated Starfrontlet, White-bellied Woodstar, Black-tailed and Green-tailed Trainbearer, Glowing and Coppery-bellied Puffleg, and Sword-billed Hummingbird. Throughout the rest of the extension, we’ll visit many fantastic birding locations around Libano, Manizales, and Pereira. Some of the many possible highlights include Indigo-capped Hummingbird, Crested Ant-Tanager, multiple antpittas including Crescent-faced, Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Buffy Helmetcrest, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Cauca Guan, and Red-ruffed Fruitcrow.

Throughout the tour, we’ll visit a variety of elevations and habitats which is sure to lead to a long and diverse list of species including many Colombian specialties and endemics.
